Café Carnage is the first production of the recently formed opera company, Opera Lab Europe, and will unite three a cappella works. Hummus, which forms part of the trilogy, describes the memories from the Lebanese Civil War, that come to Andreas’ mind, as his friends (an ensemble of six singers) question him about his journey to this country destroyed by war.

Based on the biblical narratives of the apostles, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750) wrote the Easter Oratorio (BWV 249) in 1725 and the Ascension Oratorio in 1735 in Leipzig. Both works are scored for SATB soloists and choir. Nélia Gonçalves will perform with the choir Essence Voices as alto soloist for both works.

In celebration of the Centenary of the Apparitions at Fátima, this programme is dedicated to Our Lady. The concert will include excerpts from Alessandro Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater for soprano and alto, Salve Regina in F by Porpora, and by Pergolesi, the Stabat Mater in C minor.

Engelbert Humperdinck composed this opera in 1892, using libretto written by his sister based on the Grimm Brothers fairytale, “Hansel and Gretel”. The Darcos Festival, in collaboration with the local community, presents a new version of the adventures of the two children as, lost in the woods, they try to escape from the wicked witch.
